Motivational Speaker, Mel Houg, works with individuals and organizations to end the stigma of mental illness while amplifying hope, connection and confidence to make an influential impact on our world. She speaks with passion, guiding individuals to effectively strengthen and elevate their knowledge of mental illness. Mel was born and raised in Rhinelander, WI. Graduated High School in 2002. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin River Falls as she earned her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, with a Minor in Health. Mel worked at Ministry/Ascension Hospice for 11 years as the Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator. In 2018, Mel made a career change to social work with Inclusa; a family care organization working with frail elders, and developmentally and physically disabled individuals. Mel is a wife, mother, coach, and board member of various organizations, ranging from the Rhinelander Women’s Club, Kiwanis, Hodag BMX, and the Rhinelander Swim Club. However, Mel is most passionate about NAMI (Northern Alliance of Mental Health) as she became a presenter of NAMI’s presentation of “Ending the Silence.” In 2018, Mel experienced a mental health crisis of her own and found herself in a locked unit receiving the help needed from Mental Health Professionals. She received coping skills as well as medication adjustments that were necessary for her. Mel, along with many of her family members, struggles with mental illness. She would love to become a spokesperson who supports others that struggle. Mel is not a licensed mental health professional, however, Mel is an individual that has lived in the body and mind of one who struggles. Tragedy has struck recently, and suicide is on the rise. Mel speaks with great intimacy about the resources available and believes mental health is just as important as physical health. Please join Mel in her story of hope for all
who suffer daily.
